Cost of living in Bali for long-term renters (2026)
Short answer. Rent is the biggest line in a renter's budget, and we measure it. A 2-bedroom villa on a yearly lease has a median of Rp 18.3M to Rp 27.5M a month across Bali's main areas, against Rp 24.4M to Rp 40M on monthly terms. Canggu: Rp 25M a month on a yearly lease.

What this guide covers
Most cost-of-living pages for Bali give a single total, then list food, scooter and utility prices that nobody can trace. We do it the other way round. We publish the cost we measure from real listings, which is villa rent, and we leave out the lines we cannot source. Where a number is not here, it is because we have no official or dated source for it, not because it is zero.

What the numbers say
- Pererenan, Kuta, Uluwatu are among the dearest places to rent a 2-bedroom monthly, from Rp 37M to Rp 40M.
- Tabanan is the cheapest area for a 2-bedroom on a yearly lease, at Rp 18.3M (57 listings). On monthly terms its median is Rp 30M.
- Ubud is an exception: for a 2-bedroom the yearly median (Rp 27.5M) is higher than the monthly one (Rp 25M). Compare the same villa on both terms before you judge it.
- Bedrooms move the price faster than area does. In Canggu a monthly stay costs Rp 25M for 1 bedroom, Rp 36.6M for 2 and Rp 53M for 3.
Our guide yearly vs monthly villa rent shows the saving and how many months you need to stay for the yearly price to pay off.
What the rent figure leaves out
Rent is not the whole bill, and asking prices are not what you will pay. Before you compare two villas, ask the owner in writing:
- whether electricity, water, wifi and cleaning are included, and if not, how each is billed
- how much deposit is held, when it is returned, and what can be deducted
- whether the yearly price is paid in one go or in instalments
- what happens if you leave early
Our guides on long-term villa rental and rental contracts and deposits cover these questions. For food, transport and visa costs, use an official or dated source. We do not publish those figures.

How we measured
Whole villas and houses listed on Ask Dalam during September 2026, one entry per property, from property platforms, agency sites, and Facebook and Telegram groups. "Monthly" means stays under 12 months. "Yearly" means leases of 12 months or more, with the yearly price divided by 12. The Rent Index hides cells with fewer than 8 listings; this guide shows a cell with 10 or more and quotes a number in the text only with 20 or more. These are asking prices, not agreed prices. The index updates on the 1st of each month.
